What is White paper?
The nine-page 2008 document "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" that described the design before any code shipped.
The paper sets out the problem (double-spending without a trusted third party) and the solution (a timestamp server secured by proof of work). It is short, readable, and still the best single introduction to the mechanism.
It is worth reading precisely because so much commentary attributes ideas to it that are not there. Much of what people call "Bitcoin's design" is later convention, not the original document.
